As the October presidential elections grow closer, President Hugo Chávez’s government and opposition leaders seek ways to combat crime, one of the most critical issues for voters.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez’s announcement of a possible cancer recurrence raises questions about Venezuela’s political future, as well as what it could mean for countries dependent on Venezuelan aid.

"I read just today that it appears the surgery [of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez] went well, and everyone would hope that he recovers and life moves on," said U.S. Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman at a meeting at COA on February 28.

The opposition candidate has yet to fully outline his presidential priorities, but his advisors indicate a balanced approach that would not break with many of President Hugo Chávez's policies.
