"If you've been to Havana recently, you know all the work that needs to be done in infrastructure," said Baring's Marc Frishman in a panel on energy in Cuba. Frishman estimates the island needs some $4 billion of investment in energy infrastrucutre and $1 billion for developing renewables. In addition, Cuba is suffering a deficit in supply after oil shipments from Venezuela fell from 90,000 barrels per day to 50,000, according to Medley Global Advisor's Luisa Palacios.

How can the United States and Cuba build trust? One place to start is through agriculture ties, said Paul Johnson. For states that depend on agricultural exports, having access to the Cuban market becomes of U.S. national interest. Other panelists discussed the opportunities for business relations with Cuba's emerging entrepreneurial sector, which has top talent in software development, according to John McIntire.

Congressman Tom Emmer introduced the Cuba Trade Act in 2015 to lift the U.S. embargo on Cuba. In this conversation with AS/COA's Alana Tummino, Emmer talks about the current vibe in Washington after the election of President Donald Trump. "Within the U.S. Senate, there is still strong bipartisan support" to lift the embargo, he said. The Republican lawmaker from Minnesota stressed it was critical to move forward with relations, especially after Fidel Castro's November 2016 passing and the impending 2018 election in which President Raúl Castro will step down.

The AS/COA Cuba Working Group partnered with CAF - Development Bank of Latin America for a half-day conference on current U.S.-Cuba relations, agreements, and investment opportunities on the island. "We believe that we need to support the reform process in Cuba," said CAF's Germán Ríos, describing the development bank's current projects in Cuba, including an innovation and entrepreneurship incubator with the University of Havana as well as technical assistance for financial reforms.
