Urban Innovations in Latin America: A Discussion with Medellin Mayor Aníbal Gaviria

Americas Society/Council of the Americas will host the first of its Latin American Mayors Series with Aníbal Gaviria, mayor of Medellin, Colombia. Mayor Gaviria will give a presentation on the state of the city of Medellin and the policies that have made Medellin the most “Innovative City of the Year” according to the Citi/Urban Land Institute/Wall Street Journal contest in 2012. The presentation will be followed by a panel that brings together leaders from the fields of government, philanthropy, and urban planning to discuss how innovative interventions have transformed  Medellin's economic performance while also improving the quality of life of its citizens. Panelists will also share views on the challenges and priorities for cities in Latin America to become globally competitive.

Aníbal Gaviria Correa

Mayor of Medellin, Colombia

Aníbal Gaviria Correa is the mayor of Medellín, Colombia. Previously, Gaviria Correa served as the governor of Antioquia from 2004 to 2007. During his tenure, he collaborated with local leaders to further development and improve equality for the people of Antioquia. Gaviria Correa was recognized as the best governor in Colombia in 2007 by the Proyecto Colombia Líder and his approval rating reached 89 percent while he was in office. In 2009, he was a presidential candidate from the Partido Liberal and later became their vice presidential running mate in the 2010 elections.

Carolina Barco

Senior Advisor, Emerging Sustainable Cities, Inter-American Development Bank

Carolina Barco is senior advisor on emerging sustainable cities to the Inter-American Development Bank. Previously, Barco served as ambassador of Colombia to the United States from 2006 to 2010, and minister of foreign affairs of Colombia from 2002 to 2006, under President Álvaro Uribe. She received her BA in sociology and economics from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and in 1975 she received a master’s degree in city planning from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In 1984 she received an MBA at the Instituto de Empresas in Madrid, Spain.

Maria Elosua

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Urban Planning, New York University

Maria Elosua is adjunct assistant professor of urban planning at New York University. Elosua is an urban designer, architect, and planner with over 20 years of wide-ranging experience. Her professional training and experience have included work in both Mexico and the United States. Elosua was a graduate studio workshop instructor at the City Planning Department, School of Fine Arts for University of Pennsylvania. She has worked on diverse projects, from regional planning to specific urban revitalization plans.

Vice President For Relationships, 100 Resilient Cities - Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation

Bryna Lipper is vice president for Relationships at 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation prior to joining 100 Resilient Cities. Lipper held leadership roles in government, non-profit, and private sector organizations dedicated to advancing the quality of urban life. Most recently, she was director of Philanthropic Research and Initiatives for the Office of International and Philanthropic Innovation at the U.S.
