“What we have seen in Venezuela is really the tip of the iceberg—a very difficult tip," said Juan Cruz, former senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs on the U.S. National Security Council, "What the United States pulled off is miraculous, and it's a lesson to many friends and adversaries alike.” At an event at Americas Society, he spoke with José Enrique Arrioja, managing editor of Americas Quarterly, about the Trump administration's actions in Venezuela on January 3, as well as the implications of the updated U.S. National Security Strategy.
Cruz and Arrioja explained how the new National Security Strategy, which elevates the Western Hemisphere as a priority and pledges to "reassert and enforce the Monroe Doctrine," is shaping regional dynamics and impacting governments, businesses, and regional stability. They also explored what some are calling a new “Trump Doctrine” to understand its possible long-term effects throughout the region.
