Introducing: Music Class with Sebastian Zubieta

This fall, the longtime Americas Society music director will host three members-only talks on the landscape of music from the Americas today.

Whether someone grew up in Latin America and the Caribbean or came to it later, the region's music is invariably part of one's core memories and experiences there.

“Music is an entry point to the emotional side of Latin America,” says Sebastian Zubieta, Americas Society's music director for over 20 years. "It’s the emotion that happens during the time when you’re listening to music that starts a curiosity for what else is there behind that music and that moment of emotion that you experienced.”

This Fall 2025, Zubieta, a composer and conductor by trade, will offer a three-part series of classes exclusively for members that will look at today’s landscape of music from throughout the Americas. These informative talks will focus on what’s happening in Latin American music today and give audiences a framework and context for understanding and ultimately appreciating music they encounter from the region at 680 Park and elsewhere.

The three classes in this series will be offered in a hybrid format via Zoom and in-person at 680 Park Ave. Following the classes, we'll hold an online-only discussion section. All AS, PC, YPA, and COA members are invited to this series.

Class 2: What Is New Music?

Wednesday, October 8

In the same way that an opera house's season is typically a mix of classic operas and new commissions, a Music of the Americas season is always a balance of popular traditional forms and, crucially, new music, which can be at times an acquired taste. This class will give context for what distinguishes new music coming from Latin America, why it’s important, and how to appreciate it.

For those in New York, this class will be followed by the first of two concerts by the Momenta Quartet at 7 p.m.

Class 3: Tango Today

Wednesday, November 5

Tango has come a long way since its origins in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century. This class will focus on today’s torchbearers, innovators, and trends that are redefining and distinguishing the genre both within and outside of Latin America.
