How U.S. Compares to Latin America on Civil Rights

Despite some of Latin America's notable rankings outpacing the United States, more improvement needs to be done across other variables according to the Americas Quarterly Social Inclusion Index 2014.

Some Latin American countries are outpacing the U.S. when it comes to civil rights and rights for women and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens, according to the 2014 Social Inclusion Index from America’s Quarterly.

The index looks at 16 Latin American countries, and how they rank in areas like economic growth, spending on social programs, access to a formal job, personal empowerment and citizens’ rights, and how they compare to the U.S.

This year, Uruguay once again took the top ranking for social inclusion within Latin America, outpacing regional economic giants Brazil and Mexico, and the U.S., as it improved in terms of economic growth, political rights and access to adequate housing.

The U.S., in fact, also placed below Argentina and Costa Rica when it came to overall social inclusion, although some data weren’t available, the report noted....
