Fernando Botero and the Complete Circus Series

The internationally esteemed Colombian artist will present the launch of his latest book Circus: Paintings and Works on Paper at Americas Society.

New York, October 17, 2013—Americas Society invites you to a press conference and discussion on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. with artist Fernando Botero for the launch of his latest book Circus: Paintings and Works on Paper (Glitterati). This latest title marks the first time the complete circus series has ever been published together as a collection and represents all of the esteemed artist’s work on one of his favorite subjects. In March 1969, Americas Society (formerly known as the Center for Inter-American Relations) presented in its art gallery Botero's first New York solo exhibition.

Inspired by a traveling circus he encountered in a small Mexican town on the Pacific coast, Botero uses bright colors and unexpected movement to celebrate the poetry of the circus in Circus: Paintings and Works on Paper. The 134 paintings and 57 drawings included in the book explore light, color, style, and space and do so with a poignancy that highlights—through the extravagant volume of Botero’s figures—the exceptional beauty of the human body. This clever series playfully engages the viewer and invites each one to participate in Botero’s circus.

After the press conference, Botero will be interviewed by Gina Tarver, assistant professor of art history at Texas State University. A book signing session will follow the presentation.
