  • Brian A. Nichols, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Western Hemisphere Affairs
  • Eric Farnsworth, Vice President, Council of the Americas
  • Susan Segal, President and CEO, Americas Society/Council of the Americas

“The Summit of the Americas will provide a historic opportunity for us to come together with our allies and partners to reaffirm our commitment to our shared values and advance a concrete agenda to help democracies deliver for our citizens,” said the Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols at the 52nd Annual Washington Conference on the Americas. He laid out an ambitious agenda for the summit, including when it comes to issues like economic recovery, climate change, migration, and the pandemic response.

“We can’t take the democratic charter of this region for granted," said Nichols.
“We must address the gap between our words and deeds, between rhetoric and reality, between what our democracies have promised and delivered." Nichols explained that, to do so, the region's democracies need to unite around common causes. One such cause he highlighted was digitization. “Our shared future is digital and our ability as a region to compete and succeed increasingly depends on defining a shared vision for how we foster digital ecosystems that connect people and improve their lives," he noted.
