Emerging Market Volatility: Contained or Contagion?
A panel of experts will share their views on what's next for emerging markets.
Overview
Emerging market equities have fallen to a five-month low, while emerging market currencies had their single biggest sell-off since 2009. The reduced stimulus in the United States has exacerbated the issue, drying up liquidity that would have flowed to emerging markets. Such declines have erased $1.7 trillion from global stocks. The MSCI All-Country World Index—which came within 5 percent of an all-time high on New Year’s Eve—dropped 4 percent since January 22, the worst loss for worldwide equity markets in six months. The International Monetary Fund urged central banks to ensure that a financial market rout in the developing world does not lead to an international funding crunch.
How will volatility affect the ability of emerging market companies to tap equity and bond markets? What effect will Fed tapering have on emerging markets? Are there opportunities in this crisis for investors? What countries are well positioned? Join AS/COA and a panel of experts to discuss the recent volatility in emerging markets and whether it will be contained or result in contagion.
