Rivka & Rabassa: Great Success. Borges Up Next

By Steve Nelson

The Literary Man blog reviews the Americas Society’s Jorge Amado book presentation and discussion hosted on September 13 presenting guest speakers translator Gregory Rabassa and novelist Rivka Galchen.

We’re happy to report that last night’s celebration of Jorge Amado’s life and works was a resounding success. Rivka Galchen and Gregory Rabassa spoke at length about Amado’s work and convinced at least one person (me) that it was high time to start reading some Amado. Rabassa’s, of course, a genius, but he’s also so consistently funny. Such a great story-teller. And Dr. Galchen engaged him with just the right variety of questions to get Rabassa rolling in his vast field of expertise on Amado and “The Boom.” Never read Amado, but supposedly fans of Gabo and Cortazar are the perfect audience for Amado’s prose. Planning on starting with A Morte e a Morte de Quincas Berro D’água. Look for the book review in the weeks to come....
