The New Yorker on Kopernikus

By Steve Smith

Writing in The New Yorker, Steve Smith called Kopernikus, conducted by Music of the Americas’ Sebastián Zubieta, “a dreamlike chamber opera haunted by the spectres of real and fictional personalities.”

Claude Vivier, a brilliant and idiosyncratic Canadian composer whose life was cut tragically short when he was murdered, in 1982, remains an artist more frequently referenced than performed. Addressing that slight, Music of the Americas musters its choral group, Meridionalis, and the International Contemporary Ensemble for the local première of Kopernikus, a dreamlike chamber opera haunted by the spectres of real and fictional personalities. Video by the Argentinean artist Sergio Policicchio accompanies the presentation.
