In Memory of Sebastián Piñera, Former President of Chile

Americas Society/Council of the Americas share our condolences with the people of Chile and the family of the ex-president at this difficult time.

Americas Society and Council of the Americas express our great sadness over the tragic passing of Sebastian Piñera, who served as president of Chile from 2010 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2022. We offer our sincerest condolences to the people of Chile and to his family at this difficult time.

"Chile lost an important leader today," said President and CEO Susan Segal, who first met President Piñera more than 40 years ago in her capacity as a banker. "We had the honor of hosting President Piñera at AS/COA several times and he always showed us his love, commitment, and enthusiasm for his country. We will remember him as an inspiring leader and esteemed friend."

A successful business leader prior to entering the political arena, President Piñera steered his country through challenges including the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic. During the latter period, Chile become one of the top countries worldwide in terms of vaccination rates. In addition, his government oversaw the dramatic rescue of 33 trapped miners in 2010 in an event that captured global attention.
