Hostile Takeover and Abandonment Explain U.S. Actions in Venezuela

Two analogies can help us understand today’s state of play and the consequences of Trump’s policy in the country.

To understand the U.S. military operation against Nicolás Maduro, many analysts have invoked a familiar historical comparison: the era of the Roosevelt Corollary (1904). This was a period when the U.S. engaged in recurrent interventions in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, roughly between 1898 and 1933.
