CNN Interviews Brian Winter on Tensions Between U.S. and Brazil
"I think this is very personal for President Trump," said AS/COA's executive vice president on accusations against former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Americas Society/Council of the Americas Executive Vice President Brian Winter spoke on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper" about the current tensions between the governments of United States and Brazil.
Tapper started the segment talking about Brazilian authorities raiding the home of Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro. The ex leader is on trial for allegedly plotting a coup against his successor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, after the country's 2022 election.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced plans to levy a 50 percent tariff on all goods from Brazil. He said that the proposed tariffs are political retribution for the treatment of Bolsonaro.
"I think this is very personal for President Trump," said Winter during the CNN interview."I think that he believes that what is happening to Brazil right now is political persecution of former president Bolsonaro in a way that reminds Trump what happened to him and the parallels between the 2000 election in the United States and the 2022 election in Brazil."
Winter was referring to incidents occurred when Bolsonaro's supporters stormed the Capitol in Brasilia in January 2023. In January 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol was attacked by a crowd attempting to stop a joint session of Congress from certifying the electoral votes of the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost.
