AS/COA Hosts President of Paraguay Santiago Peña

In a private event, the president spoke about socioeconomic progress, investment, regional cooperation in his country, and the bilateral U.S. relationship.

On February 19, 2026, Paraguay's President Santiago Peña attended a private event at Council of the Americas' Washington office to meet with COA members from a diverse range of sectors. The president spoke about Paraguay’s socioeconomic progress, investments in the energy and digital sectors, regional cooperation, and the importance of the country's partnership with the United States.

Also present at the meeting was U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Andes and Southern Cone at the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs F. Cartwright Weiland, as well as Paraguay's Ambassador to the United States Gustavo Leite Gusinky, Minister of Foreign Relations Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, and Permanent Representative to the OAS Raúl Florentín.

COA Vice President Kevin K. Sullivan said the following about the meeting: “COA was thrilled to host President Peña, who talked with our members about his vision and the strategies that have accelerated the country’s economic and social progress under his leadership.”

This was the fourth time COA hosted Peña. He participated in events at AS/COA's New York headquarters in 2025, 2024, and 2023.
