i24: Eric Farnsworth on AMLO's Campaign Promises

The Council of the Americas vice president talked about Mexico's shift to the left with the rise of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Days before the election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the presidency of Mexico, AS/COA Vice President Eric Farnsworth talked with i24's The Rundown about how the rhetoric and campaign promises of the candidate, known as AMLO, gave him such a commanding lead in the polls heading into the July 1 vote.

“Mexico, and Mexicans more particularly, are looking for change right now,” said Farnsworth. López Obrador’s campaign emphasized growing the economy, reducing crime, and fighting corruption throughout the country, promises “he will have to deliver on,” he added. Despite politically polarizing domestic climate, when it comes to rejecting the U.S. presidential administration’s rhetoric and immigration policy, “All the Mexican candidates for president have basically taken the same position,” said Farnsworth.
