Fanny Sanín: Geometric Equations
Fanny Sanín: Geometric Equations
Watch curator Edward J. Sullivan speak on the Colombian-born painter and detail what visitors will find at Americas Society's gallery.
“Between the small studies and the monumental paintings are several different layers of artistic activity,” says Dr. Edward J. Sullivan about Colombian-born, New York-based artist Fanny Sanín. Sullivan is the curator of Fanny Sanín: Geometric Equations, the first institutional survey of the artist, currently on view at Americas Society.
Sullivan explains the journey of Sanín’s works from small sketches to large-scale acrylic paintings, and her decades-long evolution from irregular, “biomorphic images” to lines of architectural precision. Giving a sense of how the physical layout of the exhibition contributes to the understanding of Sanin’s career, Sullivan concludes, “The fact that Fanny Sanin is showing in a place that I like to think of as an intellectual laboratory for artistic experimentation and viewing is very significant.”
Fanny Sanín: Geometric Equations is part of Art at Americas Society’s Women Artists Series, dedicated to important yet under-recognized women artists from Latin America. Director and Chief Curator of Art at Americas Society Aimé Lukin Iglesias describes Sanín as “a pioneer of geometric abstraction in the Americas.”
The show, open from June 4 to July 26, outlines the five-decade-long career of the Colombian artist, guiding visitors through the subtle changes in Sanín’s use of color and form to explore geometry’s possibilities.
