Curator Tobias Ostrander on Lilia Carrillo: Ruptures and Premonitions
Watch the curator of the Americas Society exhibition offer insight into Lilia Carrillo’s artistic practice and works for view in New York.
Focusing on a selection of works from 1961, when Mexican painter Lilia Carrillo’s mature visual language came into focus, through 1974, the year of her premature death, the show currently open at Americas Society examines Carrillo's paintings and emphasizes the physicality of her work.
The exhibition Lilia Carrillo: Ruptures and Premonitions explores Carrillo’s association with the Generación de la Ruptura and its challenge to dominant artistic traditions in Mexico. In this video, curator Tobias Ostrander highlights key works and themes shaping the exhibition, including Carrillo’s material experimentation, her engagement with abstraction, and her role within Mexico’s avant-garde.
The show will be on view from May 13 through August 1, 2026 at Americas Society.
