In an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Shery Ahn at the 52nd Annual Washington Conference on the AmericasDeputy U.S. Trade Representative Jayme White covered the Biden administration’s goal to “take a fresh look” and “rethink trade” to focus on environmental goals and security for workers.

Ahn asked White about the administration’s approach on a variety of trade matters, from China’s impact on regional commerce, to how the trade agenda will play into the 2022 Summit of the Americas, to opportunities for nearshoring. White commented that trade pacts such as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and the Central America Free Trade Agreement act as counterbalances to Beijing’s role in the region. He also said that, while there are at times tensions with trade partners, “I think it’s important to reflect on what we share in common.”
