Maria Laura da Rocha
Maria Laura da Rocha is secretary-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2023-present). Abroad, she was ambassador to Romania (2020–2022) and ambassador to Hungary (2017-2020); representative of Brazil to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO (2014-2017); permanent delegate of Brazil to the United Nations Education Organization; permanent delegate of Brazil to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (2011-2014). Before that, she was minister-counselor at the Embassy in Paris (2003-2008); first secretary at the Embassy in Rome (1992-1995); second and first secretary at the Embassy in Moscow (1985-1989); and was second secretary at the Embassy in Rome (1981-1985).
In Brazil, da Rocha held the following positions at the federal level: she was head of the Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (2008-2010); secretary of Diplomatic Planning of the MRE (2008); head of the office of the Minister of State for Science and Technology, and acting minister of state (1999-2002); head of the office of the Secretary of Strategic Affairs Presidency of the Republic and the Extraordinary Minister of Special Projects (1995-1999); and was deputy director-general of Administration of the Presidency of the Republic (1991-1992). She joined the preparation course for the diplomatic careers (CPCD) of the Rio Branco Institute, in 1976.
She began her career as third secretary on 06/10/1978, and was promoted to first class minister on June 18, 2008. The daughter of Arthur Verissimo da Rocha and Laura Martins da Rocha, she is married to Sandro Melaranci and has two daughters, Elisa Melaranci and Marina Melaranci. She was born in Rio de Janeiro on September 26, 1955.
Maria Laura da Rocha é secretária-geral do Ministério das Relações Exteriores (2023-). No exterior, foi embaixadora na Romênia (2020 – 2022) e embaixadora na Hungria (2017-2020); representante do Brasil junto à Organização das Nações Unidas para Alimentação e Agricultura – FAO (2014-2017); delegada permanente do Brasil junto à Organização das Nações Unidas para Educação, Ciência e Cultura – UNESCO (2011-2014). Antes disso, foi ministra-conselheira na Embaixada em Paris (2003- 2008); primeira secretária na Embaixada em Roma (1992-1995); Segunda e Primeira Secretária na Embaixada em Moscou (1985-1989); e foi segunda secretária na Embaixada em Roma, (1981-1985).
No Brasil, da Rocha exerceu os seguintes cargos na Administração Pública Federal: foi chefe do Gabinete do Ministro de Estado das Relações Exteriores (2008-2010); secretária de planejamento diplomático do MRE (2008); chefe do Gabinete do Ministro de Estado da Ciência e Tecnologia, e Ministra de Estado Interina (1999-2002); chefe do gabinete do Secretário de Assuntos Estratégicos Presidência da República e do Ministro Extraordinário de Projetos Especiais (1995-1999); e foi diretora-geral adjunta de Administração da Presidência da República (1991-1992).
Ingressou no Curso de Preparação à Carreira de Diplomata – CPCD do Instituto Rio Branco, em 1976. Iniciou a carreira como Terceira Secretária, em 06/10/1978, e foi promovida a Ministra de Primeira Classe em 18/06/2008. Filha de Arthur Verissimo da Rocha e Laura Martins da Rocha, é casada com Sandro Melaranci e tem duas filhas, Elisa Melaranci e Marina Melaranci. Nasceu no Rio de Janeiro em 26/09/1955.
