Picturing Guatemala: Images from the CIRMA Photography Archive 1870-1997

America Society presented Guatemala in Front of the Lens, Images from the Photography Archive of CIRMA: 1870-1997. The show was curated by Valia Garzón Díaz and provided an overview of Guatemalan history and the country’s photographic production since the end of the last century. The exhibition featured the ethnographic images of Emilio Herbruger and Alberto Valdeavellano created in the photography studios of Juan José Yas and Tomás Zanotti.

The Center for Regional Investigations of Mesoamerica (CIRMA), founded in Guatemala, is a non-profit institution that aims to contribute to the recovery and conservation of the intellectual and cultural patrimony of Central America. The display of images revealed the development of photography in Guatemala as well as its insertion within the context of Latin American photography.
