PAHO Health Nexus Dialogue II: Strengthening Health Systems & NCD Management
In Washington, PAHO and FDA officials joined the private sector to discuss how to get ahead of the noncommunicable diseases that challenge the Americas.
Overview
On September 17, COA hosted a high-level dialogue in Washington, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The dialogue explored how early, timely screening and diagnosis and improved management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) can strengthen health systems across the Americas. The event featured PAHO Deputy Director Mary Lou Valdez; PAHO Director for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health Dr. Anselm Hennis, and members of PAHO's leadership team. They were joined by Deputy Commissioner for Policy, Legislation, and International Affairs at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Grace Graham, and representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.
The discussion followed the continuum of care: from prevention and early detection, to timely diagnosis, treatment, and referral, to making improvements sustainable over time. Participants focused on the four major NCDs: cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease. Together these account for the majority of deaths in the region. Participants exchanged views on how PAHO's Better Care for NCDs initiative and HEARTS in the Americas can help turn evidence into routine care. They also discussed how regulatory frameworks, public-private collaboration, and sustainable financing can support innovation, access, and stronger primary health care.
This high-level Health Nexus Dialogue was part of AS/COA's Healthcare Series.
