Overview
Most foreign coverage of Mexico focuses on President Claudia Sheinbaum and her relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump. But the story of the conservative opposition also speaks volumes about the country today—and where it may be headed in years to come.
After its resounding defeat in the 2024 elections, some have described Mexico’s traditional opposition as adrift or even “missing.” Figures, including media magnate Ricardo Salinas Pliego and other voices on the right, are debating a way forward, with implications for the business climate and Sheinbaum’s legislative agenda.
At the same time, a counterweight could emerge from the coalition helmed by Sheinbaum's Morena party, which has absorbed conservative movements. Could a check on power come from within the coalition's own ranks?
