Overview

Even before the COVID-19 upended the global economy, U.S. trade policy was at an inflection point with the ratification of USMCA, while regional trade policy was set to take new directions. With the U.S. general election approaching, turnover in leadership in many key countries, and the pressing need to re-energize the regional economy, the Council is developing a strategy for engaging on trade in the months ahead and into 2021.

Council of the Americas Trade Advisory Group will hold a discussion of priority areas and directions for Council engagement.

Among the issues to consider are:

  • Trade-related effects of the pandemic for the Americas and solutions to promote growth
  • USMCA implementation
  • Future bilateral US trade developments: Brazil, Ecuador, CAFTA
  • Regional trade developments (CPTPP, Pacific Alliance, etc.)
  • Trade policy positions heading into the U.S. elections and the 2021 Summit of the Americas
  • Possible cross-cutting issues for future programming: supply chain diversification, labor, digital trade, SMEs.

The log-in information will be sent out to registrants prior to the video conference.
