Overview

As part of the Healthcare Series, the Council of the Americas held a discussion with senior representatives from the public sector, multilateral organizations, and the private sector to examine the evolving landscape of Venezuela’s healthcare system, including emerging opportunities and persistent structural challenges.

Panelists included Maria Cecilia Rachadell, founding partner of  Interjuris Lawyers, and Mercedes Santana, president of Pharma Asesores Internationales S.A. (Pharmaseint). Additional participants included representatives from the Pan American Health Organization, the United Nations, CAF, and the U.S. government.

The conversation explored the gradual reopening and restructuring process of Venezuela’s healthcare system, highlighting the growing demand for innovative therapies, diagnostics, medical devices, and digital health solutions. Participants discussed the expansion of the pharmaceutical market alongside ongoing challenges related to infrastructure, regulatory fragmentation, financing constraints, and shortages of healthcare personnel. The discussion also examined the importance of compliance frameworks, local partnerships, and long-term engagement strategies for international companies seeking to operate in the Venezuelan healthcare market.
