Fabiana Cozza brings to light the sounds of the terreiros (religious spaces) where ancient Afro traditions flourished, with the colors of Bahia, the rhythms of the samba circles of Rio de Janeiro, and the samba that gave rise to bossa nova.
About the Artist
Fabiana Cozza has one of the most stunning voices to emerge from Brazil in recent years and is considered by her compatriots one of the nation’s leading interpreters of Afro-Brazilian music. Her repertoire reflects knowledge of the many cultures of Brazil, as well as love for the many ways music was born from the African diaspora. Many of her songs are written by young Brazilian composers who share her interest in the relationship of Brazilian music to other cultures of the New World. Her instinct for good writing, brought to life with her extraordinary voice, results in music that is sensuous, evocative, and powerful.
Cozza has been described as a Brazilian Dianne Reeves, an apt comparison as both are rich, full-bodied contraltos of immense warmth, power, and clarity across a wide range. Others have likened her to the legendary Clara Nunes and Maria Bethânia, noting that when she sings in her lower register, she can reach the depth of a female tenor. The underlying impulse driving her music is samba—the Afro-Brazilian social, cultural, and musical phenomenon.
Her newest album Dos Santos (2020) has been considered highlighted by critics as one of the most important releases of recent years. In parallel with her artistic career, Fabiana Cozza is developing her doctorate in music at the prestigious Unicamp (State University of Campinas) on the voice and Afro-diasporic drums. The research was inspired by her “Corpo da Voz” workshop for singers, actors, and those interested in investigating the voice as a creative power, a path to self-knowledge and artistic development. Cozza has expanded her work as a teacher, thinker of Brazilian culture, and researcher beyond the Brazilian territory, having conquered students and interlocutors in California, Cuba, France, Cape Verde, and Argentina, among other countries where she has carried her art.
