Overview

The Council of the Americas welcomed Cristina Planter Riebeling, Mexico's undersecretary for North America, to its Washington, DC office for a private discussion with members on June 18. The conversation provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the priorities shaping the bilateral relationship, regional competitiveness, and the future of North American economic integration.

The meeting took place as U.S. and Mexican officials convened in Washington for the second round of negotiations ahead of the 2026 U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement Joint Review, underscoring the importance of continued dialogue between government and the private sector on the region's evolving trade agenda.

The discussion was moderated by Ambassador Kevin Sullivan, vice president of AS/COA, and also featured Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Juan Carlos Lara-Armienta. Participants explored key issues affecting the bilateral agenda, including trade and investment, supply chain resilience, regional competitiveness, and opportunities to strengthen U.S.-Mexico collaboration under the USMCA framework.

The conversation reaffirmed the value of sustained public-private engagement in advancing a strong and competitive North American partnership.

This event was part of the COA's Trade Advisory Group.
