Reed Sees Immigration as Economic Boost

At an AS/COA immigration forum, Atlanta's Mayor Kasim Reed spoke on how the city could further its economic growth by being more welcoming to immigrants.

Atlanta could boost its economic growth by being more welcoming to immigrants, Mayor Kasim Reed said Tuesday.

Reed said Atlanta is No. 2 in job growth among U.S. cities. But he said growth is possible if the Atlanta follows in the footsteps of cities like Charlotte and Nashville, which have received economic boosts after introducing welcoming initiatives for immigrants.

Phil Kent, chairman and CEO of Turner Broadcasting System, also spoke at the panel on immigration and the economy, which was hosted by the America’s Society/Council of the Americas. The event was held at the Georgian Terrace.

“When you become mayor of the city, you basically have a time clock that’s running,” Reed said. “You know that you’ve got four years to make change. What that should do for you is create a sense of urgency in wanting to learn from people who have already taken on the challenges that you face....”
