What turn will Chile take in its presidential election this year? Four years ago, voters gave Gabriel Boric, a leftist congressman and former student activist, a decisive victory in Chile’s presidential elections. With consecutive reelection barred, a new president will soon take the reins. But a glance at the polls proves it’s unclear who that will be.
Leading first-round polling is Jeannette Jara of the Communist Party, who served as Boric’s labor minister. In June, Jara won the primary of the leftist Unity for Chile primary.
But one big reason Jara has a leg up in polling is that, unlike the leftist coalition, the right never held a primary, leading to a fragmentation of support across candidates. Former Deputy José Antonio Kast of the Republican Party, who lost to Boric in the 2021 runoff, leads among this group. Still, he’s seen his support dip in the final weeks two other right-wing candidates—Deputy Johannes Kaiser of the National Libertarian party and radio host and economist Franco Parisi, an independent—have risen. Meanwhile, former Senator Evelyn Matthei of the Great and United Chile coalition, who once consistently polled in third, has also seen her support slump.
The tightening race leaves in doubt who may end up competing in the December 14 runoff that will take place if no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win in the first round.
The eventual winner takes office on March 11, 2026. This is Chile’s first presidential election since 2012 where voting is compulsory. November 1 was the last day polls could be released before the first-round contest.
In the November 16 first round, will Chileans pick a successor to President Gabriel Boric who will shift the country’s ideological direction?
