Peru's Congress Impeaches Dina Boluarte, Installs José Jerí as Interim President
Amid an insecurity crisis, Boluarte becomes the latest in a succession of Peruvian leaders to be expelled from the executive office after a unanimous vote.
Shortly after midnight on October 10, Peru’s Congress approved the removal of Dina Boluarte as president. At the culmination of an express impeachment process that took less than 24 hours, all 122 members of the 130-seat legislative body who were present at the session voted to oust Boluarte from office on charges of “moral incapacity.” Originally elected as Pedro Castillo’s vice president in 2021, Boluarte assumed the presidency in December 2022 after Castillo’s impeachment and served two years and ten months as head of state, the longest time of any president since 2016. A presidential term is five years in Peru.
The 38-year-old leader of Congress, José Jerí of the conservative We Are Peru party, is serving as interim president, per the Constitution. Given that elections were already scheduled for April 2026, he is set to complete the current presidential term, which runs until July 28, 2026. Jerí is Peru’s seventh president in nine years.
