Mia Mottley: Caribbean, or World Leader?

The prime minister of Barbados’ ambitious plans to finance the fight against the climate crisis have the world listening.

PORT OF SPAIN — “This world still looks too much like it did when it was part of an imperialistic power,” said Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, at the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November 2022. “The global north borrows with interest rates between one and four percent. The global south, around 14%. And then we wonder why energy partnerships are not working.” The cost of financing the transition to a low carbon economy or paying for disaster recovery and adaptation is a major challenge for developing economies—especially so for island nations....
