Maduro Pardons Over 100 Political Opponents in Venezuela

“Maduro ‘pardons’ a number of opposition figures and activists for ‘crimes’ they didn’t commit. Such a generous gesture!" AS/COA's Eric Farnsworth said in The Financial Times.

Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s president, has pardoned more than 100 political opponents including some who are in jail, others who are sheltering in foreign embassies in Caracas and some who have fled the country owing to fear of persecution.

The president’s communications minister, Jorge Rodríguez, made the announcement on Monday. It was unclear why the government had chosen to act now although the move comes amid a heated debate within the fragmented opposition about whether to participate in congressional elections in December...

Mr Guaidó gave no immediate response to the pardon. His top foreign envoy Julio Borges, while welcoming the move, pointed out that there were still many opponents of the regime in detention.

Others responded with scepticism and sarcasm.
