Kevin Sullivan Recognized for Helping Free Nicaraguan Political Prisoners
NED and the October 30 Coalition honored the AS/COA vice president alongside leaders who have worked to free political prisoners around the world.
Americas Society/Council of the Americas welcomes the recognition of AS/COA Vice President and head of its Washington office Kevin Sullivan, who was honored by the National Endowment for Democracy and the October 30 Coalition for his 2023 efforts in securing the release of political prisoners from Nicaragua while he served as U.S. ambassador there from 2018 to 2023.
In an October 29 event at NED’s Washington headquarters, Sullivan was recognized alongside a group of leaders who have worked to free political prisoners around the world. Damon Wilson, president and chief executive officer of the National Endowment for Democracy, was present at the ceremony, as well several freed Nicaraguan political prisoners and their families.
Sullivan played a pivotal role in securing the release of 222 political prisoners, who included prominent opposition candidates, activists, and journalists. They were flown to Washington, DC, on a US Government charter flight and granted humanitarian parole upon arrival.
“Last night, former political prisoners, their families and the October 30 Coalition honored Americans who have stood with them in their struggle for freedom,” said Wilson on social media after the event. “Their courage inspires us. Standing with those imprisoned for freedom is a proud American tradition.”
