Gregory Rabassa in Conversation with Rivka Galchen, Thurs Sep 13

By Steve Nelson

The Literary Man blog announces the Americas Society’s upcoming program to commemorate Jorge Amado’s centennial on Thursday, September 13.

Literarians, we’d like to give a little shout out to a top shelf literary event that’s taking place this Thursday September 13. In honor of what would have been legendary novelist Jorge Amado’s 100 birthday, our favorite translator Gregory Rabassa will be speaking with Rivka Galchen about the work of Amado. There will be readings, questions, and dialogue between the featured guests. Discounted books will be available, too. It promises to be a can’t miss event for any readers and writers with an interest in translation, Latin American literature, good reading, good writing, language, and all things literary.

Here’s the official release about the event, which starts at 7pm Thursday September 13 and takes place at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute, 684 Park Ave at 68th street, New York, NY.

Join legendary translator Gregory Rabassa and award-winning novelist Rivka Galchen in a lively discussion and reading that celebrates what would have been the Brazilian author’s one-hundredth birthday and the publication, by Penguin Classics, of two new translations of Amado’s masterworks: The Double Death of Quincas Water-Bray and The Discovery of America by the Turks. The program will include a clip from a documentary on Jorge Amado by João Moreira Salles. The program will include a clip from João Moreira Salles’s documentary Jorge Amado (1995).
