Brian Winter Participates in UN Commission on Latin America's Geopolitical Future
The AS/COA vice president joined global leaders in an 18-month ECLAC commission to explore geostrategic shifts. Findings were released August 4.
At a time of global shifts and great power rivalry, we are pleased to share that AS/COA Vice President of Policy and Americas Quarterly Editor-in-Chief Brian Winter was one of 13 commissioners to participate in the 18-month-long independent Commission on Geopolitics, Globalization, and Development for Latin America and the Caribbean at the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean independent Commission (ECLAC).
Convened by ECLAC Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs and co-chaired by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and former Colombian President Iván Duque, the commission brought together leaders and experts from around the world to examine how geopolitical shifts are reshaping the global economy and what that means for Latin America's development and international role over the next two decades.
The participants explored topics such as the evolving relationship between the United States and China, the economic consequences of organized crime and insecurity, the impact of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, and strategies for strengthening the region's resilience and competitiveness in an increasingly fragmented global landscape.
On August 4 at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile, the group presented its final report, Ruptures and Opportunities: Proposals for Latin America and the Caribbean to Thrive in the New Geopolitical Era. The document offers recommendations to help governments and policymakers navigate this period of transformation to position the region for long-term growth.
