Americas Society Awards Gold Insigne to Dominican President Luis Abinader

The distinction, presented at a dinner in New York, recognizes his leadership and impact in the Dominican Republic and across the hemisphere.

New York, September 23, 2026—Americas Society presented President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader with the Gold Insigne, the organization’s highest honor, for his outstanding leadership in his country and the hemisphere as he advances economic, democratic, and institutional progress domestically and across the region.

President Abinader received the distinction during a private ceremony held on the evening of September 23 at Americas Society’s headquarters in New York that brought together business executives and public-sector leaders. The Gold Insigne is awarded to democratically elected heads of state whose exceptional work has had a profound and lasting impact on their country, the lives of its people, and the region’s progress.

President Abinader was recognized for his exceptional efforts to advance the Dominican Republic’s economic recovery, his steadfast commitment to defending and strengthening democracy, and his prominent role in promoting regional cooperation, particularly in the areas of security and economic integration.

Susan Segal, president and CEO of Americas Society/Council of the Americas, and Andrés Gluski, chairman of Americas Society/Council of the Americas, presented President Abinader with the distinction.

“President Abinader’s leadership has had a transformative impact not only on the Dominican Republic but also across the region,” said Segal. “His record will serve as a model for decades to come, and it is an enormous honor to present him with this distinction tonight.”

Gluski highlighted the president's leadership in guiding the Dominican Republic’s economic recovery following the pandemic, strengthening the country’s democratic system through the 2024 constitutional reform, and promoting regional cooperation on security and more resilient supply chains.

“President Abinader, tonight we recognize a period during which the Dominican Republic confronted an extraordinary crisis, restored confidence, strengthened its institutions, and expanded its role in the hemisphere,” said the AS/COA chairman. “Today we recognize a form of leadership rooted in a deep belief in the country and, above all, in its people. President Abinader embodies the leadership our hemisphere needs to grow, prosper, and more confidently claim its rightful place in the world.”

“Andrés outlined the reasons why we are receiving this recognition. For me, all I was doing was fulfilling my duty—the duty I was elected by the Dominican people to carry out,” said the president. “We will continue working to support democracy, business, and sensible policies, which are what bring true progress to our countries. And through your investments and businesses, you are an essential part of that development.”

The Gold Insigne has previously been awarded to Raúl Alfonsín in 1985, Ronald Reagan in 1987, Fernando Henrique Cardoso in 1998, Ricardo Lagos in 2005, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2008, Michelle Bachelet in 2009, Felipe Calderón in 2011, Juan Manuel Santos in 2012, Mauricio Macri in 2017, Iván Duque in 2021, and Luis Lacalle Pou in 2023, among others.
