#womenASCOA: Professor Maja on the Importance of Persistence

Professor Maja focused her remarks on the importance of persistence, perfectionism, owning your mistakes, having self-compassion, and tracking progress.

In her talk at the 8th Annual AS/COA Women's Hemispheric Network Conference in New York, McMaster University sociologist and confidence researcher Professor Maja talked about the fundamental difference between self-criticism and self-compassion, underlining that by practicing self-compassion, you will always have an ally in yourself. She also spoke of the importance of owning compliments, not apologizing for everything, and the need to stop ruminating on failure, one of biggest obstacles to getting past mistakes. “When we make a mistake, we think we are the mistake, and that internalization is gendered,” she said.
