Miguel Ángel Mancera was elected the mayor of Mexico City in December 2012. He first came to public service in 2000 as an advisor to the Representatives of the Assembly of the Federal District in the Commission of Enforcement and Administration of Justice. That same year, Mancera was appointed as director of investigations and procedure at the Secretariat of Public Security in Mexico City, where he was also the director of Complementary Police Forces and an advisor to the Secretary of Public Security in Mexico City. In 2005, he was named the legal director at the Secretariat of Social Development in Mexico City. Mancera later went to Mexico City’s Attorney General’s Office as a process deputy attorney and then as the deputy of Preliminary Central Investigations. In 2008, he became the head of the Attorney General’s Office and he was also named as the executive secretary of the Council of Public Security in Mexico City. Mancera studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), received his master’s in law from the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), and earned his PhD with honors from the UNAM Law School.
