José Antonio Meade

Secretary of Social Development, Mexico

José Antonio Meade is the secretary of social development of Mexico since 2015. Prior to this position he served as secretary of foreign affairs from December 1, 2012. Before he served as secretary of finance and public credit of Mexico from 2011 to 2012. In past years he has served as secretary of energy, undersecretary of finance (tax), chief of staff, and general director of banking and savings at the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit. Meade has also served as CEO for both Financiera Rural and the National Bank for Rural Credit (Banrural), deputy secretary of Bank Savings Protection at Mexico’s Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings, and general director of Financial Planning at the National Commission for Retirement Savings’ System. He has taught microeconomics and macroeconomics courses at the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM) and Yale University, as well as courses in economic analysis of law for ITAM’s master’s program in public policy. Meade received a PhD in economics from Yale University, a law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and a degree in economics from ITAM.
