Overview

Council of the Americas hosted the World Bank’s new report: Shifting Gears to Accelerate Shared Prosperity in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Shifting Gears takes stock of a decade of progress in the Americas, offering means to measure the achievements of Latin American and Caribbean governments in alleviating poverty and expanding the reach of economic growth. It also provides further insights into new areas for development.

The report seeks to contribute to the World Bank’s commitment to eradicate extreme poverty and boost prosperity for the bottom 40 percent of the population by 2030. The authors provide an extensive review of the region’s progress toward these objectives, outline the ongoing challenges, and propose a set of policies for maintaining progress in that direction. Christopher Sabatini provided comments on the report as well as a preliminary results from the Americas Quarterly second Social Inclusion Index.

  • Louise Cord, Sector Manager, Poverty Reduction and Gender Group, Latin America and Caribbean, World Bank
  • Christopher Sabatini, Editor-in-Chief, Americas Quarterly (and primary author of the Social Inclusion Index) and Senior Director of Policy, Americas Society/Council of the Americas
