Overview

As Argentina’s economic difficulties deepen, President Mauricio Macri has introduced new austerity measures and is seeking to renegotiate the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a bid to restore market confidence and balance the budget. The further devaluation of the peso, triggered by external shocks, seems to have brought the end to Macri’s fiscal “gradualism”, as he grapples with a stagnant economy and the flight of foreign capital. U.S. President Donald Trump and the IMF have pledged continued support for Argentina, but time will tell if Macri is able to put the country on the path to economic stability.

Council of the Americas will hold an off-the-record discussion on Argentina's prospects for economic recovery with Professor Arturo C. Porzecanski from the School of International Service at American University and Professor Sebastian Galiani, former vice minister of Argentina’s Treasury under Macri, now based at the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland.
