Overview

Council of the Americas' Energy Action Group will hold a meeting with representatives from the Mexican embassy for a discussion on future prospects for North American trade and energy cooperation.

The United States has prioritized trade atop its economic agenda and signaled an intent to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and other long-standing commercial alliances.

Energy is a fundamental component of North American trade, interlinking the economies of the United States, Mexico, and Canada through investments and inputs that power industry. North American energy systems are deeply integrated, but it remains unclear what precise impact a reworking of NAFTA would have on energy investments and flows.

COA would like your participation in a working group discussion on the way forward for trade and energy, with a particular focus on U.S.-Mexico relations. The conversation will focus on the opportunities for cooperation and collaboration on energy issues under a revised trade agenda. Energy and trade officials from the Mexican government will provide opening remarks followed by a broader group discussion.

Speakers:

  • Héctor Castro, Secretariat of Energy Representative, Embassy of Mexico
  • Francisco Sandoval, NAFTA Economist, Embassy of Mexico
  • Sergio García, Head of Economic Affairs, Embassy of Mexico
  • Jose Martin Garcia, Ministry of Finance, Tax and Customs Administration Representative, Embassy of Mexico
  • Michael Ratner, Energy Policy Specialist, Congressional Research Service
