Overview

Council of the Americas will hold a public discussion with award-winning journalist and NPR correspondent, Tom Gjelten, on the Latin American and Caribbean immigrant experience in the United States.

In his latest book, A Nation of Nations - A Great American Immigration Story, Gjelten probes the immigrant experience after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act. He portrays in detail five immigrant families from Bolivia, Korea, and Libya, revealing the economic, social, political, and personal challenges for first- and second-generation family members. He examines public responses to changing populations, new immigrants’ relationships with existing communities, and backlash incited by illegal immigration, among other topics. Gjelten is also author of Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba.
