Speakers:

  • Heraldo Muñoz, UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator and Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) (Author)
  • Lally Weymouth, Senior Associate Editor, The Washington Post (Moderator)

Getting Away with Murder: Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination and the Politics of Pakistan reveals a startling story of betrayals, corruption, and foreign influence that led to the death of one of the world’s leading politicians. Offering unparalleled personal insight, Muñoz situates Bhutto within Pakistan’s turbulent evolution as a nation and cites her murder as the major turning point in the country’s decades-long relationship with the United States.

Muñoz’s thrilling description of the investigation reads like a true-life spy novel, with the interception of his official emails, constant leakage of information to the press, jihadist-directed attacks on UN buildings and employees in Pakistan, unaffiliated operatives gaining access to the commissioners, at times lax security, and even veiled death threats. Muñoz also provides a granular analysis of the potential culprits behind the assassination. Refusing to believe that the 16-year-old suicide bomber at the rally acted alone, Muñoz points to several likely perpetrators. Though the individuals behind the elaborate conspiracy may never be found, Muñoz comes closest to piecing together what happened that tragic day.

In Getting Away with Murder, Muñoz outlines the event’s lasting consequences, especially concerning U.S.-Pakistan relations. He argues that, despite recent setbacks, neither country can afford a total breakdown in relations.
