Addressing the Skills Gap in Latin America
Join AS/COA for a presentation to discuss the importance of human resource development, student exchanges, and labor reform for improving the competitiveness of Latin America’s labor forces.
Overview
As Latin America’s economies grow and greater investment flows to the region, domestic and international businesses are struggling to find qualified labor. This “skills gap” results not only from a tightening labor market—with unemployment currently at 6.5 percent—but also from shortfalls in the labor force which often lacks the education, training, and experience necessary for highly skilled jobs.
Representatives of the private sector and educational institutions discussed the importance of human resource development, student exchanges, and labor reform for improving the competitiveness of Latin America’s labor forces and economies. Panelists talked about the current technological needs of employers and investors, gaps in education and training, mentorship programs in the workplace, the role of student exchange programs and the private sector, and Brazil’s recent Science Beyond Borders program.
