Venezuela's Refugee Crisis Demands Coordinated Action

“Multilateral development organizations should step forward and take the lead,” AS/COA’s Chairman Emeritus William R. Rhodes co-writes about the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis in the Financial Times’ beyondbrics.

The latest UN estimates show that 4.3m Venezuelans have left the country since 2014, a figure set to rise to 5m by the end of the year. Venezuelans are being driven into exile by a lack of basic foods and medicines and a breakdown in basic social services.

However, of the $738m requested of national governments and private donors by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to assist migrant-receiving countries in Latin America, a mere $175m has been forthcoming...
