In Memory of Senator John McCain (1936-2018)

Americas Society and Council of the Americas express their sadness over the passing of Senator John McCain, who served his country, both in uniform and public office, for six decades.

Americas Society and Council of the Americas (AS/COA) express their sadness over the passing of Senator John McCain, who served his country, both in uniform and public office, for six decades.

“With John McCain’s passing we have lost an ardent champion for good relations with our hemisphere. John was a strong supporter of NAFTA and consistently advocated for better immigration policies. He was also a supporter of Council of the Americas, gracing us with his presence at our annual Washington Conference on several occasions, and in 2013 he was the recipient of our Chairman’s Award for Leadership in the Americas. We will miss him greatly,” said AS/COA Chairman Emeritus John D. Negroponte.

It was a tremendous honor to host Senator McCain at COA's 2011, 2013, and 2017 Annual Washington Conference on the Americas. As he stated in 2011: "Despite the challenges that remain in the Americas...our partners in Latin America are succeeding, and they are succeeding, most of all, because of our shared values: a commitment to human rights and democratic development, opportunity and equal justice, free minds, and free markets."

Americas Society and Council of the Americas offer their sincerest condolences to the family of Senator McCain.
