Voices from Latin America: Americas Society Partners in Carnegie Hall's Fall Festival

Americas Society is proud to partner with Carnegie Hall’s Voices from Latin America, a citywide festival taking place on November 8 to December 11, 2012. The fall festival will celebrate the diverse range of Latin American cultures, inviting audiences to explore a vibrant repertoire of music, visual arts, dance, film, literature, and photography events. With a musical focus on Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela, Voices from Latin America programming was developed under the guidance of Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov; Venezuelan conductor of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra Gustavo Dudamel; Afro-Cuban jazz pianist and composer Chucho Valdés; and Brazilian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Gilberto Gil. The festival will feature more than 70 performances and programs at Carnegie Hall and partnering cultural institutions.

As a Voices from Latin America partner, Americas Society presents a rich and multifaceted series of Latin American music, literature, visual arts, and policy programs. Event highlights include jazz, classical, and contemporary music and musicians from Colombia and Mexico; an interdisciplinary literary symposium with poets, writers, and environmentalists examining aesthetic, social, and political issues in eco-literature across Latin America; and a visual arts exhibition, Gego: Origin and Encounter, Mastering the Space that features works by German-born Venezuelan artist Gertrud Goldschmidt.

• VISUAL ARTS • Sep 29-Dec 8: Gego: Origin and Encounter, Mastering the Space
  Americas Society’s exhibition commemorates the hundredth anniversary of acclaimed Venezuelan artist Gertrud Goldschmidt, known as Gego.
  The gallery is FREE and open to the public; Hours: Wed-Sat, 12-6pm
   
• VISUAL ARTS • Nov 14-Dec 11: Tres Perspectivas: Contemporary Art from Latin America
  This exhibition, on view at Carnegie Hall's Zankell Hall and in collaboration with Henrique Faria Fine Art, will feature work by three artists fundamental in the development of Latin American conceptualism and contemporary art—Leandro Katz, Marta Minujín, and Luis Molina-Pantin.

• MUSIC • Nov 9 at 7PM: Paul O’Dette - ¡Jácaras! Baroque Music from Mexico and Brazil
  In his Americas Society debut, Paul O'Dette will perform solo lute music from Mexico and from a collection recently discovered in Brazil.
   
• LITERATURE • Nov 12 at 7PM: Mario Vargas Llosa’s The Dream of the Celt
  2010 Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa and renowned translator Edith Grossman will join Americas Society for a celebration of the author's latest novel.
   
• MUSIC • Nov 13, 19, 26: Harpist Edmar Castañeda
  Americas Society hosts a series of performances by acclaimed Colombian-American harpist Edmar Castañeda. Join us for events on November 13, November 19, or November 26, or take advantage of a special discount offer to attend all three!

• LITERATURE • Nov 14, 15, 16: Eco-Literature in Latin America Symposium
  November 14 at 7PM: Keynote Lecture – “The Birds, or My Life as a Writer and Environmentalist Activist” • Mexican writer and environmentalist Homero Aridjis will deliver the keynote lecture inaugurating the Americas Society's Eco-Literature in Latin America symposium.
  November 15 at 4PM: Films and Panel Discussion – Confluencias and The Trees Have a Mother • The second evening of the Eco-Literature in Latin America symposium will open with two films: Confluencias and The Trees Have a Mother. A panel discussion will follow.
  November 16 at 7PM: Review 85 Launch: Eco-Literature and Arts in Latin America • On the final night of the Americas Society's Eco-Literature in Latin America symposium, please join us for the launch of Review 85.
   
• MUSIC • Nov 20 at 7PM: Alejandro Escuer - Flying
  Join us for an audio-visual concert experience with Mexican flutist-composer Alejandro Escuer.

• LITERATURE • Nov 29 and 30 at 7PM: A Tribute to Novelist Carlos Fuentes (1929-2012)
  In the first night of this two-evening tribute, writers from throughout Latin American will honor the late Mexican author and discuss his formidable contribution to world culture. The second night welcomes critics and translator's of the late Mexican author's work to comment on his legacy.
