Fernando Botero Launches Bullfight: Paintings and Works on Paper at Americas Society

The internationally renowned Colombian artist will present for the first time in the United States his second compilation of thematic works.

New York, October 15, 2014—Americas Society and Glitterati Incorporated will host renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero for the U.S. launch of his book Bullfight: Paintings and Works on Paper on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. The book launch will be preceded by a press conference from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A book signing session will follow the launch.

Bullfight features more than 140 oil paintings and 35 drawings by Fernando Botero, providing a gorgeous look at the artist’s iconic subject, the tauromaquia, or bullfight. In his youth, Botero developed a passion and curiosity for bullfighting that has remained with him throughout his illustrious, six-decade career. The artist was profoundly influenced by the spectacle of the bullring—the vivid colors, the dynamic movement, the beauty and violence, bravery and fear, the fine line between life and death.

Bullfight is the second in the artist’s compilation of thematic works, following his highly regarded Circus, published by Glitterati Incorporated in October 2013. The book includes an introduction by Curtis Bill Pepper (1917-2014), an American writer and journalist, author of several books the latest of which, Leonardo, is a biographical novel of Leonardo da Vinci; and a Foreword by Juan Manuel Santos, the 32nd and current President of Colombia, in office since 2010.

Fernando Botero (b. 1932) is the most famous living artist of our time, whose distinctive figures are instantly recognizable. His work is internationally praised and has been spotlighted by The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Art in America, and BBC Newsnight as well as by Sotheby’s in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Guggenheim in Bilbao and New York amongst others. At the start of his career, the Colombian artist studied at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid before traveling to Paris and Florence to expand upon his understanding of fine art. In 1958, he gained widespread recognition for his first prize piece at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos. Botero continues to be an active member of the art community, living and working primarily in Paris, Monaco, Colombia, and Pietrasanta, Italy, near the quarry where his sculptures are constructed.
