Americas Society Receives NEA Grant to Support 2013 Culture Series

Americas Society is proud to announce that it has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support its 2013 Culture series Iconic and Emerging Figures from Latin America.

New York. November 28, 2012 — Americas Society is proud to announce that it has received a $40,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support its 2013 Culture series Iconic and Emerging Figures from Latin America. The series extends across Americas Society’s visual arts, music, and literature programs to present iconic cultural figures along with emerging voices from the region. The series will feature writers Carmen Boullosa, Jorge Volpi, and musicians Cuarteto Yaracuy and Cuarteto Latinoamericano, among others.

Americas Society will also present Unity of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt and the Americas, the first Humboldt exhibition in the United States. The multimedia exhibition includes both historic works by Frederick Church and other American and European artists who followed in Humboldt’s footsteps, as well as a commissioned eco-art installation inspired by Humboldt’s legacy by contemporary U.S. artist Mark Dion.

Americas Society is one of 832 non-profit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. "I'm proud to announce these 832 grants to the American public including Americas Society," said NEA´s Chairman Rocco Landesman. "These projects offer extraordinary examples of creativity in our country, including the creation of new work, innovative ways of engaging audiences, and exemplary education programs."

“We are thrilled that NEA has renewed its support for Americas Society in 2013 with an increase in funding,” said Americas Society President and CEO Susan Segal. “The NEA grant will allow us to present Latin American artists of historical and contemporary significance in a new light, offering our audience a unique experience of the region’s cultural contributions and influence.”

In March 2012, the NEA received 1,509 eligible applications for Art Works requesting more than $74 million in funding. The 832 recommended NEA grants total $22.3 million, span 13 artistic disciplines and fields, and focus primarily on the creation of work and presentation of both new and existing works for the benefit of American audiences. Applications were reviewed by panels of outside experts convened by NEA staff and each project was judged on its artistic excellence and artistic merit. This year’s Art Works grant to Americas Society represents an increase in support from previous years.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) support will strengthen Americas Society’s unique role and visibility as the premier presenter of culture from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada.
